CD2H Sensor + DXM1200: Smart IIoT Integration Demo
CD2H Sensor + DXM1200 Gateway: Real-Time IIoT Integration for Smarter Monitoring
In the world of industrial automation, flexibility, accuracy, and connectivity are essential. At Ramco, we’re always exploring and demonstrating ways to streamline technology integration for smarter, more efficient operations. In this demo, Jeremy Honnold, Application Engineer at Ramco, showcases a real-world setup featuring the OPTEX FA CD2H Laser Displacement Sensor and Banner’s DXM1200-X2 IIoT Gateway—a powerful combination for real-time data collection and IIoT applications.
This integration shows how to reliably measure distance on a moving conveyor, wirelessly transmit the data, and trigger alerts or outputs based on threshold logic—all using compact, scalable, and rugged hardware.
What Is the OPTEX CD2H Laser Displacement Sensor?
The CD2H Series from OPTEX FA is a high-performance laser displacement sensor built for applications requiring repeatable precision, fast response times, and flexible output options. This series stands out for its:
Best-in-class repeat accuracy: As tight as 0.25 µm
Fastest-in-class sampling speed: 133.3 µs
Extended measurement range: Up to 1,200 mm
Multiple communication options: IO-Link, RS-485 (Modbus RTU), Analog, and Digital I/O
Built-in OLED display: Offers real-time distance readouts, waveform display, and bar graph mode
These sensors are ideal for tasks such as height detection, stack measurement, and part positioning across industries like packaging, electronics, automotive, and general manufacturing.
In Jeremy’s demo, the CD2H sensor is mounted over a QC Conveyors belt with sample parts passing underneath. The sensor is configured to detect the height of each object and communicates that data via Modbus RTU to a Banner wireless node, which sends the data wirelessly to the DXM1200-X2 IIoT Gateway.
Why Use the Banner DXM1200-X2 IIoT Gateway?
The DXM1200-X2 is a high-performance IIoT gateway built to handle condition monitoring at scale. It bridges wired and wireless devices, collects real-time data, and pushes it to your network via Ethernet or cellular—all in a sealed, rugged IP67 housing. Here’s what makes it a standout in industrial environments:
Key Benefits of the DXM1200-X2:
Connect up to 200 devices — both wired and wireless
Transform data at the edge with Banner’s configuration tool, ScriptBasic, or MicroPython
Fast sample rates from wired devices with the installation flexibility of wireless
IP67-rated housing for harsh industrial environments
Ethernet and LTE-M cellular connectivity for scalable, remote monitoring
Compact, sealed design for flexible installation anywhere on the factory floor
In the demo, Jeremy uses the DXM1200 to wirelessly receive serial data from the CD2H sensor, process it in real time, and trigger a Banner K50 Pro indicator light. The light responds to pre-set distance thresholds, showing whether a single part is present (green) or if a stack or issue is detected (red).
real-world application Example
In this setup, a single part on the conveyor triggers a green light, indicating a successful, within-tolerance read. When two parts are stacked—raising the measured height—the system triggers a red fault condition. This use case demonstrates how manufacturers can easily automate quality control, part validation, or material presence verification on a production line.
By combining the high accuracy of the CD2H sensor with the IIoT capabilities of the DXM1200-X2, Ramco delivers a smart, scalable solution for inline measurement, remote monitoring, and intelligent control—perfect for modern smart factory environments.
