Smarter Safety Across Machines with Omron CIP Safety
At Ramco, we believe safety shouldn't come at the cost of productivity. That’s why we’re excited to showcase Omron’s CIP Safety system—an innovative solution that enables synchronized safety across multiple machines without added complexity.
In this live demo, Ramco St. Louis Applications Engineer Darin Acup demonstrates how the Omron CIP Safety controllers enable two machines to communicate and respond to safety events in unison. By using standard EtherNet/IP communication, this setup allows safety devices like emergency stops and resets to be shared between machines—whether they're side-by-side or across the production floor.
What is CIP Safety?
CIP Safety is an extension of EtherNet/IP, allowing functional safety information to be exchanged over standard Ethernet networks. It supports the integration of safety devices into existing network architectures, simplifying setup while maintaining compliance with stringent safety standards.
Omron’s CIP Safety controllers allow manufacturers to:
- Integrate standard and safety IO within a single control system
- Use off-the-shelf EtherNet/IP infrastructure to expand safety networks
- Maintain high-speed communication between devices across machines
- Achieve flexible safety zoning, modular cell layouts, and remote resets
Real-World Application: Multi-Machine Safety Sync
In Darin’s demo, two simulated machine networks are connected to demonstrate how each system can independently run but also respond to safety events as a team:
- Emergency Stop (E-stop): When triggered on one system, both machines respond appropriately, demonstrating a networked reaction to safety events.
- Reset Capabilities: Reset actions can be performed locally or remotely, giving operators flexible options depending on the machine’s physical layout.
- Run Mode Resumption: Once the system is safely reset, operations resume smoothly without unnecessary downtime.
This kind of setup is ideal for operations like:
- Palletizing lines with multiple robot cells
- Large packaging or bottling operations with distributed control
- Complex systems where shared safety logic across machines reduces wiring and configuration burden
Flexible I/O Options and Controller Interoperability
Omron’s system is compatible with various safety-rated input and output modules, including integrated safety IO blocks that can be tailored to specific application needs. Plus, because CIP Safety rides over EtherNet/IP, it’s not limited to Omron systems—it can be used in any architecture where EtherNet/IP is supported, offering flexibility for mixed-control environments.
Why It Matters
Traditionally, scaling safety systems across multiple machines required extensive wiring, added hardware, and custom programming. With Omron’s CIP Safety solution:
- Downtime is reduced during changeovers or restarts
- Operators benefit from intuitive, streamlined safety resets
- Safety compliance is maintained without sacrificing throughput
- Manufacturers can reduce total cost of ownership with simplified integration
Want to See It In Action?
If you’re exploring ways to make your production lines smarter and safer, CIP Safety from Omron is a powerful tool that bridges both goals. From modular machine builders to large-scale manufacturing plants, it offers a scalable and reliable path to integrated safety.
