In water treatment, powdered lime is added to the water and later removed using a filter press. This press uses mechanical force to push and hold filter elements together while water is pumped through. Periodically, it opens so the lime residue can be cleared and the filters cleaned—a process that poses serious injury risks if not properly safeguarded.

The original light curtains, which were designed to stop the machine if someone reached into the press, had failed after years of service. The challenge wasn’t just replacing them—it was modernizing the system without overhauling the entire enclosure or creating downtime.
